Team Image

Our team selected the image of a ladder leaning against a tree as a metaphor for leadership, growth, and guidance. The ladder reflects role modelling and guidance — leaders serve as a support foundation that helps others climb towards their potential. Just as each step on the ladder represents a step upward, effective leadership involves supporting incremental development and learning opportunities for others. This aligns with the transformational leadership theory, which focuses on inspiring and empowering followers to achieve shared goals (Northouse, 2022).

Initially, my understanding of leadership was largely authoritarian — I associated leaders with authority, control, and direction. However, through reflection and exposure to various theories such as servant leadership (Greenleaf, 1977) and transformational leadership (Bass, 1999), my understanding evolved. I now see leadership as a relational process focused on influence, empowerment, and collaboration rather than command. In contrast to my earlier view, I recognise that authentic leaders (Avolio & Gardner, 2005) rely on self-awareness and empathy, fostering trust and engagement rather than hierarchy.

Collaborating with my peers allowed me to explore leadership as a shared and social construct. Discussions revealed that leadership evolves differently across contexts, and effective leaders encourage mutual learning and growth. Working collaboratively highlighted the importance of communication, emotional intelligence, and role modelling — qualities that promote cohesion and shared purpose within teams.

For the future, I aim to strengthen my emotional intelligence, particularly in self-regulation and empathy, to better connect with and motivate others. In addition, I intend to cultivate stronger mentoring and coaching abilities to help others grow — similar to the ladder’s role in enabling upward movement. Ultimately, I want to embody a leadership style grounded in authenticity, compassion, and continuous learning — supporting others while continuing to grow myself.
